WIP - A Star is Born

I had a sudden spur of inspiration this week so jumped right in and made a start on one of my (many) Making Christmas projects - a wonky star quilt for my friend's gorgeous baby boy.

And, surprisingly, I've already managed to finish the top.

A Star is Born quilt top

I had originally pulled a gorgeous stack of blues and greens - but then couldn't help adding in a few cheeky smaller stars in red and orange.  I like the punch.

This baby measures 40" x 40" so should be the perfect size for little bub.  All I have to do now is decide on the quilting and get it done.  Hmm... any ideas???

  1. What a wonderful baby quilt that will be!
I'm useless at quilting ideas and nearly always go with echoing or straight lines!!

  4. Oh, nice work! I agree that the orange gives it a bit of "punch" as you say. Quilting ideas quilting: 1) keep the background simple - curvy lines in white (like wind blowing, or lines coming from the stars as if they were shooting stars) and then highlight the stars by quilting 1/4 inch inside with matching or contrasting colours, or reproducing a star pattern. If you do handquilting at all, I can see some big stitch quilting inside the stars in contrasting colours such as orange for the blue stars and vice versa. Option 2) use the background to create more stars in the same style as your pieced stars, either in white or in contrasting colours (but in the latter case I would use a fine thread). I'm sure there are many, many other ways you could quilt this and it would still look wonderful!

  6. Love the contrast made by adding the little stars. Really makes the quilt! Looking forward to seeing all your planned projects, too. There are only 62 days left to go!

  9. This is amazing! He is going to love it so much (when he is old enough to love a quilt)! As for quilting, I'm stippling everything right now, so I vote stipple! :)

  10. So brilliant! Love the pops of orange and red too. I'm all about simple quilting and i think diagonal lines going one way would look cool and like they were shooting stars :-)

  17. Love it! The little stars in red and orange are perfect. For the quilting, I would keep it really simple to leave the quilt nice and soft and cuddly. Maybe some echos around the stars and some straight lines in the background.

  18. a great baby quilt - love the colours. I would be quilting in straight lines, but only because that is all I know how to do!
